Where do hair extensions come from?

While you love having longer hair with the help of hair extensions, have you ever thought about where the hair came from? We’ve listed the most common hair extension hair in the world and done some background search about where they came from and how.

Indian hair extensions

Indian hair is considered the most beautiful hair there is. The texture of the hair is fine, and comes with a natural wave. The extensions can also be bought with a natural strong wave and curl. Most of the hair extensions that you can see on the market have come from India.

For their religious reasons, they find donating hair to be as a gift for God. It also refers to beauty and their own appearance.

The hair are cut off usually at temples, they’ve got tonsure rooms where people sit in rows and have their hair cut off by people who have been appointed to the job by the temple. It’s done in a clean enviorment that’s also hygenic, the hair is collected and sold off. The hair are sent off to factories, where they’re sorted by length, hackled and sterilized. They also wash them and dry them, then tied into bundles.

Italian hair extensions

Sadly most Italian hair is imported from India. Italy doesn’t grow the hair, but does process them.

Asian/Chinese hair extensions

The hair that originate from China are usually much more coarse and straight than Indian, Russian or European hair extensions. If you accomplish mission impossible and manage to get your hands on Chinese extensions that are remy and also unprocessed, then you’ve got a piece of beautiful art in your hands. But to face the reality, most Chinese hair are non-remy and last for a very short amount of time.

European hair extensions

Most of the hair that claim to be European are sadly not. The hair originate mainly yet again from India, Moldavia, Ukraine and Latin America – and they’re called European never-the-less. Even the Chinese tend to thin the hair down to look like European hair do, but it’s very poor by quality. The real European hair don’t usually come from wealthier countries, only the less-wealthy countries have hair markets.

Russian hair extensions

Ranging by price from $200 and up, this kind of hair extensions are very expensive. If you’ve decided to buy yourself Russian hair extensions, we’d recommend getting a sewn in weave, so it can be used again for a few years. The natural hair tones range between nr 2 and nr 6, but of course it can be bleached lighter. The hair can be re-used for up to 2 years, and the best form to wearing them would be in keratin tip bonds, as it prevents shedding.

Virgin hair extensions

Only a tiny amount in hair extensions is actually virgin hair. The term means that they’re not permed, nor dyed – ever. Asian hair are usually black in color and straight, and to bleach them to the right tone – it’s  not virgin anymore. Most common virgin hair color is #1B (black) to #2 (dark brown).

Synthetic hair extensions

Synthetic hair extensions don’t have the same qualities as real hair and it can look overwhelmingly shiny.  They’re also the cheapest kind of extensions and wigs out there. Most of them are heat resistant type, which means they cant be curled or straightened, and you could melt them by accident, but there are synthetic hair that CAN be styled with heat.  This kind of hair would be excellent for temporary occasions, such as Halloween or costume parties.
