Should you get hair relaxed ?

If you’re considering relaxing your hair, there are lots of things to keep in mind. A hair relaxer is meant to relax the natural curl in your hair, which can make it easier to manage and give you more styling options. Relaxed hair can be a flattering look on anyone, if you know how to care for your tresses. One of the best ways to do this is to choose a relaxer that will perform well on your hair type.

Relaxing natural hair – curly hair

If your hair is natural and you only want a slightly looser curl, a natural hair relaxer may be the best choice. These relaxers often contain ingredients that will condition your hair and prevent it from getting too frizzy, such as aloe vera or avocado oil. These relaxers usually work better in the spring or summer months for people with very thick hair, since there is more moisture in the air, which can prevent the hair from breaking.

Relaxing straight hair

Hair that is already fairly straight can benefit from a relaxer that helps to straighten the roots. This can reduce the need for weekly blow-outs, which can cause stress to hair that is thin. When the hair is relaxed, you won’t have to heat-style it as much, and you can easily wear it in sleek ponytails or top knots.

If you decide to relax your hair, you’ll likely need a touch-up every six weeks or so. If your hair is thin, you may be able to go as long as eight weeks before you have to get another relaxer. For thick hair, you may have to go four or five weeks before getting a new relaxer. Be sure to get your ends trimmed each time you get a relaxer touch-up, so your layers will stay intact. Trimming your ends will also keep your split ends from traveling to the rest of your strands. Keep in mind that men can get relaxers too, and should follow the same guidelines as women when choosing a product. The relaxer should be based on hair type (i.e. relaxers with nourishing oils for thick hair and silk proteins for thin hair) in order for you to get the beautiful results you want.

No matter your hair type, it’s always best to choose a relaxer that won’t damage your scalp. Stay away from relaxers that contain lye or peroxide, as these can lead to dry scalp. These ingredients also strip your hair of their natural moisture and take away your hair’s body, shine and bounce.

Whether your hair is thick, thin, curly or straight, healthy relaxed hair needs to be moisturized regularly. Be sure to use a leave-in conditioner each time you wash your hair to prevent split ends and breakage. Instead of using a cream-based moisturizer on a daily basis, an oil-based moisturizer is best for relaxed hair. This keeps the tresses from being weighed down, but gives your hair the shine it needs to keep your style looking its best.
